COSY OR CLAUSTROPHOBIC?

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

Whether you live in a small home by choice or circumstance, there’s no doubting the need to make the most of the space available. This is even more true as we’re spending so much more time at home and it may serve so many more purposes including the office and the classroom as well as somewhere to relax and unwind. Small homes can be cosy and comfy but they can also quickly appear cluttered and claustrophobic, which is why you should keep these tips in mind to make the most of your space.

Digitise Your Clutter

Piles of paper, bills and essential documents look much messier when your space it as a premium. The majority of important files can be digitised and you can go paperless on all main bills now. Not only does it save space, it’s good for your eco-conscious as you’re contributing less to mass deforestation.

Convert all your paper documents to digital using a reliable online cloud storage provider and only keep paper copies of things you really cannot live without. Removing unnecessary clutter helps your home feel more open and airy.

Hide Appliances and Equipment

Disguising your appliances can give your home an arty and unique edge, as well as creating the illusion of space. Samsung has developed The Frame TV which allows your TV screen double up as a work of art (or multiple works). This is brilliant for times you want to switch off and don’t want to be surrounded by the depth and dark of an empty screen.

Drop down covers and curtains could also be used for televisions and other appliances, as it removes the multi-use feel of the smallest homes where the kitchen may be metres from the sleeping area.

Let The Light Stream In

Natural light is the key to creating space and airiness in any home. Making the most of the light sources you have is essential for a more spacious feel. Bright white décor and wall coverings can help as the light can easily reflect and brighten up the space.

If you opt to partition your small space then consider glass or white partitions too, as they allow the light to spread further and ensure the space feels bigger. When it comes to electric lighting, never opt for a single bulb. Be imaginative and playful with table and floor lamp combinations and even consider wall sconces to create warm, welcoming light.

Get Creative with Storage

Making the most of the space you have involves quite a lot of creative thinking and storage solutions could be hidden in many unique and unexpected places. Many small studios have foldaway beds which either have storage beneath or fold away into the walls, creating even more floor space. Other cleverly designed tiny homes include sinks which can be rotated to allow for more counterspace and partition half-walls full of shelves which serve a dual purpose. Consider every piece of furniture in your home as multifunctional and look what additional uses you could get from it.

Many of us love the cosy intimacy of a micro-sized home and some of the amazing designs out there make it easy to see why. Don’t let your small home become overwhelmed by fuss and clutter with these easy and quick fixes.
