OPEN THE BOX & SAVE A LIFE!

Updated: Jul 19, 2021

You will have no doubt seen or heard the publicity surrounding the collapse and subsequent cardiac arrest involving the Danish footballer Christian Eriksen during an international match recently. He was very lucky to have survived as 80% of those who suffer 'sudden cardiac arrest' outside of hospital do not.

Chances of survival for those who suffer 'sudden cardiac arrest' are increased greatly if bystander CPR is undertaken as early as possible. In addition, if an 'Automated External Defibrillator' (AED) is able to be located and used quickly then survivability increases even more by maintaining viability for the patient to receive more advanced life support by ambulance crews on their arrival.

Supermarket, Railway Stations, Gyms, Swimming Pools all have an AED sitting in a box waiting to 'save a life'! Most towns and villages have an AED easily accessible to the public in an emergency. When you call for an ambulance in this situation, the call handler will tell you where the nearest AED is.

Community AED units are becoming more widespread and they save lives. An AED is a computerised device that is designed to deliver a shock to a patient and bring a person's heart back to a normal beating rhythm following a cardiac arrest. It is important to deliver the shock as soon as possible and having an AED locally in the community, saves valuable time being able to deliver the shock before the emergency medical services arrive.

Learning how to use them is very easy, this video course covers the basics of CPR and AED use so that you can have the basic skills to use a community AED in an emergency. You do not have to have experience in first aid to complete this course and you do not have to complete a practical lesson as AED units are very easy to use.
