THE WORLD OF TRAVEL AFTER COVID

As the UK looks forward to a vaccine ending most of our Covid misery, what does it mean for those who want to travel?

Travel after COVID-19

The country’s vaccination campaign started early December 2020 and it is hoped that life will start to get back to normal by Spring 2021.Although there could be quite a wait for those under 50 to get their jabs, there is some light at the end of the tunnel for those who are desperate to take a much-needed holiday.

Even for those who haven’t had their vaccine, it is likely that as the programme is rolled out the quarantine times will be reduced, possibly down to just five days. This has resulted in a huge swell of interest in searching and booking foreign holidays.

There hasn’t been an announcement yet that suggests anyone travelling abroad will need to have some kind of immunity passport, or proof of having had a vaccination. It has been looked at by the World Health Organisation and encouraged by the aviation industry but not confirmed as a likely requirement.

"The vaccine development is what the travel sector needed; a small boost in confidence to show people that 2021 will be better. Bookings are starting to flow in with the second half of 2021 likely to see a boom in terms of overseas trips." Paul Charles, PC Agency

Check The Small Print

Prices are likely to rise to help the industry recover its losses although it is unlikely this will put off eager tourists who are keen to get away on their holidays again. Even the airline officials support for a ‘vaccine stamp’ scheme doesn’t seem to be putting them off. However as the mutation of the virus is still questionable and the possibility of future lockdown not entirely eradicated here are few tips for those thinking about booking for a holiday this year.

1. Can you secure the holiday with a low, or even a zero, deposit? Even if the cost to book is very low, check there aren’t expensive cancellation policies should you not be able to travel.

2. What is the company’s cancellation policy? In light of uncertainly, many airlines are offering flexible booking conditions and free postponements with the ability to change dates and destination without incurring a fee, although you might need to pay any difference in price.

3. Will your money be financially secure? The industry has been hit hard and even the most established travel companies are on shaky financial ground. So make sure you book with an Atol-protected tour operator or agent. If booking directly with an airline, make sure your travel insurance includes cover for financial failure, or pay with a credit card – ensuring a refund if the carrier collapses. If you book directly with a company based abroad, it may be very hard to get a refund if it goes out of business or your holiday is cancelled.
