TIME TO DECORATE?

People have always said that a home is the reflection of the person or people living inside it, and if you subscribe to this philosophy then you must want to decorate your house in a way that shows off your identity. But the act of decorating an entire house is a daunting task, and if you’re a newbie decorator, you might be tempted to stop trying altogether. Fortunately for you, there are ways to combat the intimidation brought on by house decoration. Here are some tips that might be helpful to someone new to the game.

First Things First: Know Your Decorating Style

Home decorating comes in two parts: the visualization and the actual decorating. So, it’s ideal that you already know what your aesthetic preferences are way before you even have your own place. You should also be aware of the various kinds of decorating styles and determine which one you like best — do you like the modern look? Or contemporary? If you know the answer to these questions, then you’ve already nailed down your style and are now halfway there.

However, on the off-chance that you’re still in limbo when it comes to aesthetic preferences, there are ways in which you can garner inspiration and stimulate your imagination.

Get into Pinterest

If you’re not aware, Pinterest is a social media service that is designed to enable the saving and discovery of information on the internet using images and animated GIFs and videos. Pinterest takes inspiration from real-life corkboards, so if you see an image that you like on the app, you can save it and have it “pinned” to a virtual board on your account. Since this app is image-based, you can find so much inspiration for home decoration there. Browse through this app for aesthetic pictures of rooms you like until you get a spark for an idea for your own home.

Follow Home Decoration and Improvement Blogs

Additionally, you can also follow blogs that are dedicated to the subject of home decoration and improvement. There are a ton of them out there, so you need to keep an eye out for the ones that you’re interested in.

There are even YouTube channels that are dedicated to home decoration and improvement. If you’re more into videos than blogs, then that might work better for you. No matter which platform you choose though, you’ll get inspiration and information, so all options are good.

Break Down Your New Home Decorating Plan by Room

Once you’ve determined what aesthetic style you want your house to be, it’s time to start your home decorating plan. Don’t attempt to decorate the whole house at once because you’ll just get overwhelmed real fast. Instead, do your plan one room at a time.

It depends on which room or rooms you want to start with first, but a good rule of thumb is to start with the room or rooms that you frequent most often. You can always get to the guest room later.

Layer Each Room Over Time

One thing that you should always remember is that decorating your new home is a long-time process. You don’t finish decorating a house — or even a room — overnight. As you spend more time in your home, you’ll get to know it better, and you’ll get new ideas on how you want a room to look and function in the future.

So, don’t stress too much about how your place still doesn’t resemble what you want it to be. It takes time for a place to really come together, so you should be patient with yourself. Just add a detail now and then — like splashes of an accent colour, flooring/carpets, lighting, etc. — and you’ll be okay.

Decorating your home may seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it shouldn’t be. It should be fun and exciting since you’re able to express yourself through art. So, don’t worry too much about making things perfect. With a little bit of time, determination, and creativity, your home will look fantastic in no time.
